Artist Bio

Seattle-based interdisciplinary process-based artist, Ren, (수연) (she/they) utilizes any and all forms of a medium to their fullest extent. Her current explorations are within textiles, painting/drawing, and printmaking, being drawn to tactile, methodical and repetitive gestures that engage an artist intimately with their materials. She has an MFA in Painting + Drawing at the University of Washington and a dual degree BA in Studio Art and Psychology at the University of Maryland, College Park. She led the curation and installation of multiple exhibitions (Sadat Art for Peace, Honors shows, Senior shows) during her senior year in the Honors program of the Department of Art at UMD. She also owns an interdisciplinary design company, Fox Rain Studios, to express her other creative interests.

Her practice is rooted in a methodical, cathartic process that incorporates an ebb and flow of physical and metaphorical tension. She engages with and pays attention to nature, tactility, trauma/memory, and sound. The textures in her interdisciplinary work come from an obsession with line, color, and form, drawing from imagery of wet or unfurling moth/butterfly wings and undulating sea creatures. She is currently weaving, drawing, painting, and spinning.
